Man Attempts To Scam Local Resident By Telephone
A local woman contacted law enforcement officials rather than give out personal information over the telephone when she was contacted by a scam artist last week.
The victim, age 72, summoned deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to her Gravel Hill Road home around 10:00 a.m. She told deputies that she had received a bothersome telephone call earlier.
The victim said that the male caller knew her first name, but did not appear to know much more. He told her that he was her “favorite nephew.” When she named both of her nephews, she said he picked one of the names and claimed to be him. She told deputies, however, that it did not sound like her nephew.
The caller told the victim that, “He was in Mexico and had got caught and needed $1,800 to get out.” She said that she told the caller that she knew he was not her nephew because he had not traveled to Mexico. She said the caller then hung up.
At the current time authorities are continuing to check into the matter.
